Harold Mueller
Profile in Magazine Article - 2013
Member Harold Mueller was profiled in the Southview Assisted Living’s quarterly magazine (2013/2014 Winter Edition). The article chronicals Harold's experience as a member of the 110 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion which provided support to the 29th Infantry Division in the Normandy invasion. His unit was the first 90mm gun battalion to shoot down a German plane on French soil. Following Normandy, he was stationed in Vierville-sur-Mer France and later in Malmedy Belgium. Harold drove a CAT, a 10-ton dulldozer-type tractor towing a 90mm gun. "It was like a bomb ready to explode", Harold said. The 110 AAA Battalion was recipient of the Normandy Invasion Arrow, five Battle Stars, and the French Croix de Guerre. Harold received a letter from President Harry S. Truman after the war: "I extend the heartfelt thanks of a grateful nation".
We are saddened to report that Harold passed away on November 27, 2013. He was a founding member of the Gateway Chapter and served as our first Treasurer. Harold was also an active member of one of our Educational Speaking Teams, visiting hundreds of local schools over the years. He and Jeanette will be greatly missed.
